What Are STC Ratings?
Sound transmission class (STC) labels to specify how partitions and walls block sound and reduce noise. Ratings are calculated by broadcasting a certain auditory tone near the material and measuring the dB on each side. A higher STC value indicates better insulation.

FLOAT GLASS

The STC rating of a single lite can range from the high 20s to the mid-30s, with its score increasing with the thickness of the glass. The soundproofing rating for most standard homes is 33 STC, while soundproofing for studios must be at least 45 STC. As a result, a mid-30s score may seem low, but it is satisfactory for office buildings that do not use all-glass construction.

TEMPERED GLASS

Safety glass that has been toughened or tempered is made with controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass, so the rating is in the same range as standard single glasses

INSULATED GLASS

Insulating glass is two or more plies of glass enclosed with air space in between. Insulating glass increases a window’s thermal performance by reducing the heat gain or loss. The combination of glass can increase the performance of IGU glass by selecting high performance glass such as Low-E Glass or reflective glass according to the usage of the glass

LAMINATED & DOUBLE-GLAZE COMBINATIONS

In both laminated and double-glazed glass, the STC rating is 40, but anything higher calls for a combination of both. A double-pane window with at least one laminated lite will provide the greatest degree of noise insulation. Noise reduction is best achieved with soundproof glass with STC rating of 45 to 50 or higher. It is not necessary to use this glass type unless your application requires the highest soundproofing level, such as a recording studio.
